I am a physical oceanographer. My main interest is: what controls water temperature in the coastal ocean? As a result, my lab studies fluid dynamics on scales from millimeters to thousands of kilometers, and seconds to decades. We study weather systems and wind-driven ocean flow, including coastal upwelling. Also: river plumes, estuarine circulation, and tides. Finally: how atmosphere-ocean heat exchange is different near land than over the open ocean. We use simple process models to understand large data sets. The data come from satellites, moored instruments, small boats, and ships.
