The Lesson:
-
The teacher will begin to read the books and introduce the students
about the Block Play, and during the book reading, the teacher will
ask the students some questions about what is a building? Where did
they see a building and what color or shape was it. Then move on to
show the children the different types and colors of the blocks, and
the students can able to see the color and shape differences, feel the
different texture and weight. Then the teacher will do the sorting
activities with the students.
-
Students may use the blocks to build, and the teacher will join and
instruct them to do the counting of blocks for the height. And discuss
with the students on the architecture skills they should focus on:
-
Designing Skill - How to create the building without the blocks
falling? what structure works best. Explore their imaginative and
creative thinking.
-
Analytical skill - Why did the blocks fall? Why is the structure not
working? With those answers, the student can learn what makes a
structure stable and strong.
-
Communication Skill - The students will be divided into a group and
work as a team. They will learn to communicate effectively in order
for them to work together to build the tallest tower.
-
Students can divide into groups and have a competition and use their
imagination to design and build of the highest blocks tower. During
the competition, the students can learn about architect skills and
problem-solving skills, they will learn by using what kind of blocks
(material) and how the structure will be the best. And by using the
architecture skills, they can relate to the real world and also bring
out the questions of why most of the building looks the same? How can
earthquake (shaking) damage the building? What made a structure strong
and stable.
-
After the competition is completed, the students can study the winning
prototypes together and analyze the reason of why is it the highest?
What made the structure stable and strong. Then the student will each
flat lay and build the blocks tower on the paper, and will use the
crayon to trace it.
