Does ESSOAr allow text and data mining?

ESSOAr does allow text and metadata mining. ESSOAr supports and participates in the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) and is a registered Open Archive Initiative Protocol for Metadata (OAI-PMH) data-provider. ESSOAr also supports the Center for Open Science SHARE Open API and the CrossRef Metadata API. All full-text content is available on the platform and can be crawled for text and data mining purposes. Standard crawlers are allowed. Bulk downloading is not supported. The terms applicable to the mining of preprints are determined by the authors' selection of either a non-exclusive or Creative Commons license (CC-BY-NC-ND, CC-BY-NC, or CC-BY). Interested parties may limit searches to specific license types to meet their specific reuse needs.

1-Click Preprint Transfer Service

What is the 1-click preprint transfer service?

ESSOAr supports the early and open sharing of Earth and space science research outputs as preprints before or concurrent with submission to a participating journal so that researchers can showcase their work to the global ESS community while it is under consideration at a journal. The 1-click transfer service is in an initiative to streamline the process: authors can now seamlessly transfer their manuscript to ESSOAr at the same time they submit their research to a participating journal and save time re-uploading files and re-entering information to submit a preprint.
Posting a preprint on ESSOAr allows authors to:
Posting on ESSOAr does not influence the peer-review process for your manuscript submission at the journal in any way.

What journals participate in the 1-click preprint transfer service?

To advance the pace of Earth and space science research, the AGU has empowered authors to share research submitted to AGU publications, Ecohydrology, and River Research and Applications on ESSOAr prior to peer review. Initially, the 1-click transfer service is available through an integration between ESSOAr and eJournal Press. The majority of AGU journals are participating through their Geophysical Electronic Manuscript Submission (GEMS) system. View the full list of partner journals currently participating in the 1-click preprint transfer service.
Interested Earth, environmental, and space sciences journals that use eJournal Press can now partner with ESSOAr to offer this service to their authors. Authors: would you like this option to be available at a specific journal you submit your work to? Let us know at essoar@essoar.org, and we can reach out to them about participating.
ESSOAr aims to broadly serve researchers across the global ESS community—we are actively working on supporting additional journals through integrations with other major editorial office systems. If you represent an ESS society or journal, please contact essoar@essoar.org to discuss an integration.

How does the 1-click preprint transfer service work?

Initial Submissions—When submitting to a participating journal, authors are offered the opportunity to opt in. Select the "Yes! Please transfer my manuscript" option if you would like to make your research publicly available as a preprint on ESSOAr. By opting in, you agree to share submission metadata, including your email address with ESSOAr. Please note: Authors can only opt to transfer their manuscript and deposit it as a preprint at the point of initial submission to a journal.
Revised Manuscripts—At present we are unable to have revised manuscripts automatically transferred to ESSOAr by the journal editorial system. (We will be working on this as a future enhancement to make the process even easier.)
Approved content posted on ESSOAr can be revised at any time prior to being accepted for publication. ESSOAr encourages authors to update their initial preprint submission and upload revised version(s) as their manuscript evolves and improves through the peer review process at the journal. The submitting author can update a new version of their approved preprint directly by logging into their Author DashboardNote: Some journals request that authors do not post versions that include changes made in response to the journal’s reviewers’ comments; be sure to check the policy of the journal you have submitted to.
Preprint posting on ESSOAr is a free, optional service and will not impact the editorial decision or time to publication at the journal.
It is a requirement that all co-authors have been informed about and approve posting content on ESSOAr. More information on submitting to ESSOAr is available here: https://www.essoar.org/submissionguide

When will my submission be transferred to ESSOAr?

Your submission will be transferred to ESSOAr after it passes through the journal’s quality control check by the journal’s editorial office, prior to being sent out for peer review.

How will I know when my submission has been transferred to ESSOAr?

The submitting author will receive a notification via email directly from ESSOAr once the transfer is finished with a link to ESSOAr’s Author Dashboard where they must complete the draft preprint submission. Please note: The submitting author must ensure they are registered at ORCID and that the same email address entered during journal submission has been verified and set to "Everyone" or "Trusted Sources" in their ORCID profile.
Additionally, all co-authors will receive a notification that the manuscript has been transferred to ESSOAr. Once the draft is completed on ESSOAr, all co-authors will receive another notification inviting them to link their ORCID accounts to the submission. The same email address entered during journal submission must be verified in their ORCID profile. Co-authors must connect their account for their ORCID iD to be validated and displayed on the posted preprint.
All authors will be required to log in with or create an ORCID account to access ESSOAr. Once connected, ESSOAr will automatically add the submission to your ORCID profile.

What files are transferred?

Your manuscript submission file (PDF format) and metadata from your initial submission to the journal will be transferred directly to ESSOAr. For original manuscripts submitted in formats other than PDF, ESSOAr will use the merged PDF from the editorial office system. If ESSOAr cannot support the original manuscript file, a draft will still be started, but you will need to upload your main manuscript to ESSOAr directly in a supported format. Currently only PDF files are supported for the main file; Word and Latex files should be converted to PDF before upload.
ESSOAr will automatically attempt to pre-populate the draft submission with the metadata (including author names, manuscript title, abstract, and funding information, if any) to save you time re-entering information. Supplemental files that meet ESSOAr’s supported supplemental file type and size limits will be included. You can also include links to additional supplemental files.

What license can I assign to the preprint?

You can assign the license of your choice to the preprint, prior to finalizing your submission on ESSOAr. Read more information on the available licenses here.

How quickly will my submission be posted on ESSOAr after transfer?

The draft with your transferred manuscript needs to be completed via ESSOAr’s Author Dashboard. All submissions to ESSOAr are assessed for suitability prior to posting, but are not peer reviewed. Submissions that pass screening will be made publicly available as a preprint in a few days, following ESSOAr’s screening process.

Help! My manuscript was transferred, but I don’t see a draft submission in my ESSOAr Author Dashboard.

Please double check that the same email address used during journal submission has been verified in your ORCID profile. Note: the default visibility setting of email address(es) in your ORCID profile is set to "only me", however at least one email in your ORCID profile must also be set to either "Everyone" or "Trusted parties" for ESSOAr to access. You can learn more about the privacy and visibility settings for your ORCID record here: https://support.orcid.org/hc/en-us/articles/360006897614-Visibility-settings

What happens to my preprint if my manuscript submission is published by the journal? What happens if it is rejected by the journal?

If your preprint is published, congratulations! Once your article has been published, ESSOAr will automatically display a link to published version of record at the journal where is was accepted.
If your manuscript is rejected by the journal, your preprint will remain on ESSOAr: Once a preprint is posted on ESSOAr, it becomes a part of the permanent, citable scholarly literature and cannot be removed. Authors can resubmit their research to another journal for consideration—please be sure to note that your work has been posted as a preprint on ESSOAr and cite it as part of the manuscript’s reference list when submitting to another journal. The vast majority of journals now accept submissions that have been posted on a preprint server and do not consider preprinting to be prior publication, however, authors are encouraged to check the policies at the specific journals they are considering.
You can update the "Submitted To" information to select the name of the journal you have submitted/re-submitted to or to manually add a link to the Version of record (final published article in a journal) if necessary. Learn how to update/revise approved content on ESSOAr.
ESSOAr is also currently working to support direct transfers of preprints directly to journals to make it the process to submit or resubmit your work for peer review simpler; this functionality will be available in future releases.

Am I able to post a preprint myself?

Absolutely! Even if you do not opt to use the 1-click preprint transfer service to easily post your work on ESSOAr, we encourage you to share your research to accelerate the open discovery and dissemination of Earth and space science early research outputs. You can also submit your preprint to ESSOAr directly. Please review our Submission Guide to get started.

Is there an embargo policy for preprints?

ESSOAr does not embargo research that has been made publicly available as a preprint. We do not suggest authors /institutions seek publicity and press coverage at the preprint stage, and instead advise that press releases are distributed at or after the time of publication of the article in a peer-reviewed journal. Authors should consult the policy of the journal they have submitted to for any additional guidance.
