Significant element of recurrent catatonia is a history of brief
episodes separated by periodic relapses. Misdiagnosis of recurrent
catatonia can lead to inappropriate management. It has been associated
with mortality from dehydration, thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and
pneumonia when untreated. Catatonia is responsive to benzodiazepines and
ECT regardless of the condition.
