Waleed H. Abdulla holds a Ph.D. from the University of Otago, New Zealand. He has worked at the University of Auckland since 2002 and is currently an Associate Professor. He has made many contributions to the APSIPA organization. He is one of the steering committee who initiated APSIPA in 2009. He held the role of APSIPA Vice President- Member Relations and Development for two terms. He is the founder and first Editor-in-Chief of the APSIPA Newsletter. He was awarded APSIPA Distinguished Lecturer. He is currently an APSIPA Board of Governors member. Waleed and collaborators presented three tutorials at APSIPA conferences in 2013 (Active noise control topic), 2014 (Speaker Recognition topic), and 2022 (Human Biometrics). The audience very well received them. He has been a Visiting Researcher/Collaborator with Tsinghua University, Siena University (Italy), Essex University (UK), IDIAP (Switzerland), TIT (Japan), ETRI (Korea), HKPU (Hong Kong), and the Czech republic. He has published more than 200 refereed publications (over 2800 citations), including a patent and a book. He is a member of the Editorial Boards of six journals. He has supervised more than 30 PhD students. He is a recipient of many awards and funded projects and was awarded JSPS, ETRI, and Tsinghua fellowships. He received the award for Excellent Teaching in 2005 and 2012, as well as Otago University Scholarship. He is a Life-Member of APSIPA and a Senior Member of IEEE.
