I have used Emacs and LaTeX as a researcher at Stanford since 1979.
I work in numerical linear algebra and numerical optimization. For the last many years I've used an iMac with F5 in Emacs running pdflatex and Skim as PDF viewer updating automatically. LaTeX is the only good way for people like me to make a nice technical document. I cannot bear to use LyX. I hope Authorea will be a good alternative.
