Ejecta is an unavoidable by-product of laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing (LPBF AM). A review of the ejecta generation mechanisms and their experimental trajectories were carried out. The characteristics of the ejected particles and their effects on the built parts can be explained by the fact that a fraction of the ejecta invariably lands on the powder bed. Suggestions for future research (ejecta generation in multi-laser manufacturing, for example) and solutions for existing challenges are proposed.
