Within the last 20 years, the alpaca (Lama pacos), a camelid native to South America's mountainous regions, has been introduced to diverse biomes in China. While their numbers are still relatively low (around 2000 in 2020), their presence in community farms/petting zoos and as privately held animals on smallholdings provides an environmental correlation acquired from the environments to which they have been introduced. In this project, bacterial isolates from alpaca faecal samples from six sites worldwide (four public petting zoos and two private smallholdings in Guangdong, Shandong, Zhejiang province and California) were examined for their antimicrobial resistance profiles.
