Pillow lavas have relatively slow travel speeds compared to cooling speed. While fresh magma erupts out from a vent, it moves rather slowly and the solidifying process on the outer layer is rapid. At the same time, fresh hot lava inside the solidified shell continues to move and crack the pillow and flow out to form a new pillow.
