Alan J. Ardell

Professor Emeritus/Research Professor

A.J. Ardell obtained a B.S. in Metallurgy from MIT in 1960, and the M.S. (1962) and Ph. D. (1964) in Materials Sci¬ence from Stanford Uni¬v. He was a NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship from 1964 to 1966 at the Univ. of Cam¬bridge, investigating pre¬cipitation and particle coars¬ening in Ni-base alloys, leading to the publication of a Ci¬tation Classic. From 1966 to 1968 he was an Asst. Prof. at Caltech, joining UCLA in 1968 as Assoc. Pro¬f. in the Materials Dept. of SEAS. He was promoted to Pro¬f. in 1974. He was a Fulbright-Hays Res. Fel¬low in '74-'75 at CEN, Saclay, France. In Oct. 1979, He was Asst. Dean in SEAS from 1979 to 1981 and Chair of the Dept. of MSE from 1982 to 1986. Was an AGARD consul¬tant at ONERA, Chatillon, France for a week in 1994. He is a member of TMS-AIME, ASM Int’l and MRS and is a Fel¬low of ASM Int’l and a Fellow of TMS. He received the Albert Sauveur Achievement Award from ASM Int’l in 2005. He retired from UCLA in Mar. 2006. From Jan. 2009 to Feb. 2012 he took the job of Prog. Director, Metals and Metallic Nanostructures, at NSF. He is currently Emeritus and Research Prof. in the Department of MSE. He won the Sapphire Prize from Springer Publishing in 2011, 2nd Place Best Paper Award published in the J. Materials Research. He supervised 21 Ph.D. and 22 M.S. students in several areas of MS&E. He is still publishing papers on a variety of different topics and has published over 200 papers in books, archival journals and conference proceedings.
