Doctoral student at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER Mohali), Knowledge city, Sector 81, SAS Nagar, India. Since I was growing as a child, I had dream of becoming a Doctor. After finishing high school, I started preparing for medical entrance exam to enter in a medical institute. I got admission as a medical student. But due to some economical crisis in my family, I have to drop the course after completing 2.5 years. To overcome this bad fate, I joined temporary job and started earning money. After a year of struggle and family issues, I decided to continue my education. So, I started searching alternate career possibilities. I was looking for opportunities in areas which have good employment prospects as well as challenges to overcome. So, I decided to do my Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering. But I had no money to join good coaching classes. One day, I was walking through the street and I found chemistry coaching class. I went there, asked for coaching and mention that I have no money to pay for coaching fees but I want to attend the classes. He (The person who runs the class) asked me about the occupation of my father. I said my father is a farmer and he is 75 year old. Then he complied and asks me to come from next day in his classes. After a month, he also arranged for coaching of other subjects with his colleagues. I started preparing entrance examination to get enrolled in engineering colleges. I spent 2 years on preparation, but perhaps, I was not totally ready for qualifying the highly competitive IIT-JEE (Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination) with good enough rank. Over these 2 years, I spent my time learning Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. First year of my preparation I did not clear any entrance exam for getting admission in engineering colleges. All those days, I often thought and used to ask myself if I am the only one struggling. Sadly, that year 2008, was the worst year of my life as I lost my father in the same year. After this incident, I entered into more darkness. It was the worst phase of my life and I started feeling depressed. One day, I was sitting along the river Ganga and my eyes filled with tears because I lost my father and there was no one in life who can support me economically and emotionally. After an hour of sitting there, I started thinking that something has to change. So, I re-questioned myself “Should I give up my dream and go back to my hometown to live an ordinary poor life in the village or should I fight this struggle to achieve my dream? All these going through tough times have already raised the stakes and added to more stress day by day.” After thinking for another hour, I decided to chase my dream and started studying effortlessly. As the result of my hard work and unconditional effort, in 2009 I got qualified in IIT JEE (which is the most highly competitive examination for getting admission in engineering institutes in India). But the rank was not good enough to get admission in any engineering institute for Mechanical Engineering branch. However, it was enough to get an opportunity to enroll in IISER Mohali (Indian institute of Science Education and Research, Mohali) for studying basic Sciences as a BS-MS student. I got scholarship that really helped me with my expenses in daily life. But still there was no money to pay for semester fees. For a couple of years, one of my brothers-in-law paid my semester fees. Unfortunately, I lost my brother-in-law in 2010, to unnatural death. So, again a disaster happened with me. I went back to home to stay for couple of month with my family and came back to institute to resume my study. Thankfully, I got economic help from our institute. I started doing part time job in our Library Journal throughout my BS-MS. After finishing two year of interdisciplinary course, I have to choose a major subject. I chose Biology as a major subject. In the year 2013, I joined Prof. Anand K Bachhawat’s lab, for my Master dissertation. I did some fruitful research work in the lab and published the work as a co-author with my colleagues in international peer review Journal. After finishing my BS-MS, I wanted to pursue my career in Life Sciences. So, I started applying for PhD position in India and abroad as well. I struggled a lot but did not get any good institute to pursue my dream. Still, I never gave up my hope and kept trying for getting PhD position. That was a difficult time for me, but perhaps all these existential struggles are part of becoming a strong hearted human being. I have always believed that these hardships are temporary in nature. I had applied for some funding agencies to get fellowship in India as well as abroad. Finally after waiting for 8 months, I got fellowship from DST-INSPIRE (Department of Science and Technology-Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) in India. Now, I am in 4th year as a PHD scholar in the yeast genetics lab under supervision of Prof. Anand K. Bachhawat. I am proud to be a part of his lab and am really excited for being a step closer to make my dream career, a reality. But obstacles in journey have not finished yet. Still I am finding it hard to get a good idea for doing independent research and shaping my career. But all these struggles force me to do more hard work and think hard about what my heart really wants. I am pledged to my dream, and I always accept challenges. My mantra (Inspiration) is “Be honest to yourself in whatever you're pursuing”. Work hard effortlessly and enjoy the present moment. Because I believe that this is the best way to grow as a good researcher and good human being. So, persons going through similar difficulties or depression, should not loose hope. Keep trying. Do hard work. One day, you will definitely achieve your dream. Acknowledgements: I would like to thanks Nitish Tayal for feedback and my lab mate inside the lab for great working environment and friends (Komal and Neetika) for great support in campus life.
