The metaverse is expected to be the defining experience of the 6G era from 2030 onwards and that broadly includes the industrial, enterprise, and consumer metaverse categories. The industrial metaverse, in particular, is increasingly gaining traction even with 5G evolution, and 6G technology and architecture will further enable numerous metaverse use cases across a wide variety of vertical industries. With the industrial metaverse, we associate use cases enabled by an accurate, high spatial resolution and real-time digital representation of the physical world, the so-called real-time Digital Twin (DT), coupled with sophisticated information processing and immersive interaction capabilities. These will include small-scale DT for prototyping and testing, cloud-controlled and collaborative industrial robots, industrial operations and facility optimization in dimensions of both large-scale DT and in-facility smart transport, as well as eXtended Reality (XR) training and field XR. Enabling the industrial metaverse will place new demands on various network performance dimensions such as capacity, data rates, latency, and reliability as well as on the network services made available to industrial applications on demand. The 6G network platform will achieve improved radio performance using wider bandwidths, distributed and scalable massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO), novel duplexing, sensing, and machine learning, and will provide flexibility and programmability that comes with cloud-native and AI-native end-to-end architectural transformation.
