Plants are an intrinsic part of the soil community, which is comprised of a diverse range of organisms that interact in the rhizosphere through continuous molecular communications. The plant-microbe continuum forms a network of underground nutrient and information highways that benefit both plant and microbial communities, as well as ultimately serve as a significant sink for atmospheric CO 2. The molecular dialogue at the rhizosphere interface is crucial not only for plants to discriminate between harmful, benign, and beneficial microorganisms but also to actively participate in crop productivity and resilience to environmental stresses. Although many facets of the chemistry of inter-organism communication remain to be discovered, and the molecular mechanisms that underly hormone-regulated symbiosis are largely unexplored, biological fertilization is an attractive tool for the sustainable production of high-value crops. Here, we discuss our increasing knowledge of the chemical repertoire that underpins plant-microbe communication and host-range specificity, highlighting how the regulated production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is used in inter-organism communication between plants and microbes and within the communities that shape the soil microbiome.

Various test structures can be used to determine the specific contact resistivity of ohmic contacts. The transmission line model test structure and circular transmission line model test structure are the most commonly used. The analytical expressions of the former are straightforward and effectively describe the electrical behavior of a contact, while the concentric geometry of the latter eliminates complications during fabrication. In this paper, we present a hybrid test structure that combines the advantages of the transmission line and the circular transmission line models. The analytical expressions of the new structure are presented, and its finite-element modeling is undertaken. The effect of contact geometry on this test structure is also discussed. Using the presented test structure, determining contact parameters does not require any error corrections.

Introduction: The subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (S-ICD) is an alternative to a transvenous ICD in patients who meet criteria for ICD implantation without concurrent need for cardiac pacing. The objective of this study is to examine the rates of and indications for S-ICD removal and extraction. Methods: A retrospective analysis of all patients who underwent S-ICD implantation between 2010 and 2022 at a single multihospital healthcare system was performed. The primary endpoint was S-ICD removal or extraction. Patient and device characteristics were abstracted from the electronic medical record. Univariate and multivariate analyses were completed to determine factors associated with S-ICD extraction. Results: A total of 372 patients (69.5% male; 48.6 ± 14.4 years old) underwent S-ICD implantation during the study period. There were 22 (5.9%) patients (81.8% male; 52.1 ± 13.2 years old) who underwent S-ICD extraction over a median follow up period of 4.4 [2.0-6.5] years. The median length of time between implantation and extraction was 39.6 [8.3-64.6] months. The most common indications for S-ICD extraction were need for bradycardia pacing (incidence, 1.08%), infection (1.34%), and inappropriate shocks due to oversensing (1.34%). A smoking history and higher body mass index were independently associated with S-ICD extraction. Conclusions: The overall rate of S-ICD extraction over 4.4 [2.0-6.5] years was 5.9%, with the most common indications for extraction being need for bradycardia pacing, infection, and inappropriate shocks due to oversensing. A smoking history and high body mass index are associated with increased rates of S-ICD extraction. With appropriate patient selection for the S-ICD, the need to remove the device after implantation is low.

This study presents a procedure based on constant amplitude (CA) fatigue data to predict the statistical fatigue lifetime of glass/orthopolyester composites subjected to repeated ordered and random two, three, and six sequences of block loadings. A numerical routine was developed to detect cycle-by-cycle the statistical strength degradation progression until failure, assuming that the strength at the end of a block cycle equals the strength at the start of the successive one and that the individual samples’ static strength, residual strength, and fatigue life share the same rank in their respective cumulative distribution function. Predictions conform to the statistically undetectable loading sequence effects and lightly overestimate the lifetimes of random and ordered high-to-low (1/100 cycles) repeated two-block loadings. The vanishing effect of the loading sequence when the block extents remain fixed, the block extent effects for a given three-block sequence, and the lifetimes of three-block loadings were fully predicted. The six-block sequence’s experimental lifetimes with different block loading orders and block extent fell within the predicted lifetimes’ cumulative distribution function. A reliable damage rule based on residual strength was proposed and compared to the Miner’s rule.

Background Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a multisystemic disease caused by mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator ( CFTR) gene, resulting in defective synthesis or function of the CFTR protein. Historically, CF treatment focused on managing symptoms and complications. Fortunately, modulator drugs are now available to directly target the defective CFTR protein. However, in some countries, such as Turkey, these drugs are not covered by social insurance. Consequently, many CF patients face barriers to accessing modulatory therapies or must interrupt their treatment. This study demonstrates the impact of interrupting modulator therapy on pulmonary function, emphasizing the need for uninterrupted continuous treatment. Methods In this study, 39 CF patients receiving elexacaftor-tezacaftor-ivacaftor (ETI) at our clinic were retrospectively analyzed. Among the patients, 18 experienced one or more interruptions, ranging from 15 to 210 days during ETI treatment. We analyzed pulmonary function test results from 27 interruption periods. Results At the beginning of the interruption, the mean percent predicted FEV1 (ppFEV1) was 69.59 ± 25.87%, which decreased to 64.96 ± 24.52% by the end of the interruption. There was a significant decrease with a mean change of 4.62 ± 8.49 (p = 0.008). However, no significant correlation was found between the interruption duration and FEV1 change. Conclusion Our results demonstrate that pulmonary functions are adversely affected by interruption periods, regardless of their duration. Even short interruptions have a significant impact on pulmonary functions. This underscores the need for uninterrupted continuation of modulatory treatment and for improved policies to ensure equitable access to treatment.

In this work, we study and solve the normalized Ricci flow equation for circle bundles over surfaces. Moreover, we study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions and their connections to some model geometries.

Aluminum alloys are primary structural materials in aircraft fuel systems, where jet fuel can significantly affect the crack propagation behavior of the materials. This paper presents a model for calculating the crack growth rate of aluminum alloys in jet fuel environment. The model is based on elastoplastic fracture mechanics and revises the interaction terms in the linear superposition model by taking into account corrosion damage and crack closure effects. The derivation process of the model is discussed in detail. To validate the efficacy of the model, fatigue crack propagation tests were conducted on three types of aviation aluminum alloys, namely 2524-T3, 7050-T7451, and 7075-T62, in the jet fuel environment. The experimental results were compared with crack growth rates in the laboratory air environment. Findings indicate that the proposed model effectively captures the primary trends observed in the experimental data. In addition, the failure surfaces of the specimens were observed using a super-depth-of-field optical microscopy system. When subjected to jet fuel, among three materials tested, the 7075-T62 alloy was found to have the roughest failure surface. This increased roughness contributing to crack closure was identified as one of the reasons why its fatigue crack growth rate is significantly lower in the jet fuel than in air.

Purpose Prior approval for reimbursement is a cost containment policy, aimed at reducing demand. It has been employed in Ireland to address financial challenges due to the shift from warfarin to Direct Oral Anticoagulant (DOACs). Studies assessing the effectiveness of this policy are limited. Thus, we aimed to examine the effectiveness of prior approval for reimbursement of DOACs (apixaban, rivaroxaban) as a cost containment policy in Ireland. Methods The Irish Health Service Executive-Primary Care Reimbursement Service database was used in this cross-sectional study. We examined the prescribing frequencies and associated costs of the oral anticoagulants; ((OACs) apixaban, rivaroxaban, and warfarin) listed in the top 100 most frequently prescribed drugs, between 2018 and 2021. Interrupted time series Poisson regression was used to assess the impact of removing the approval requirement of apixaban in September 2019 followed by the other DOACs in November 2020. Results The prescribing frequency of OACs increased by almost 20% from 2018-2021. This study showed there were significant differences in the proportion of OACs prescribed among the Community Drug Schemes. A statistically significant decreased use of apixaban (<1%, p<0.05) occurred when prior approval was removed for all DOACs. Conclusions The removal of prior approval for reimbursement of DOACs in Ireland had a minimal impact on the prescribing frequency trends of the OACs. Future use of these potentially useful policies by healthcare systems requires careful consideration of drug type, approval criteria and length of time the policy remains in place to minimise any negative effects associated with their use.

During our careers, we met Jean-François Muller essentially in the context of scientific meetings and PhD examination panels, in relation with the use of Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry. However, one of us (PCM) had also the opportunity to meet him in a less well-known aspect of his implication in societal activities related to the monitoring of air quality. In this recollection of Jean-François Muller, we would like to recall how his science has also served societal causes.

Malaria remains a significant global health problem, mainly due to Plasmodium falciparum, which is responsible for most fatal infections. Infected red blood cells (iRBCs) evade spleen clearance by adhering to endothelial cells (ECs), triggering capillary blockage, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction and altered vascular permeability, prompting an endothelial transcriptional response. The iRBC IT4var04/HBEC-5i model, where iRBCs present IT4var04 (VAR2CSA) on their surface, was used to analyse the effects of iRBC binding on ECs at different temperature (37°C vs. 40°C). Binding of non-infected RBCs (niRBCs) and fever alone altered the expression of hundreds of genes in ECs. Comparing the expression profile of HBEC-5i cells cultured either in the presence of iRBCs or in the presence of niRBCs revealed significant upregulation of genes linked to immune response, nucleosome assembly, NF-kappa B signaling, angiogenesis, and antiviral immune response/interferon-alpha/beta signaling. Raising the temperature to 40°C, simulating fever, led to further upregulation of many genes, particularly those involved in cytokine production and angiogenesis. In summary, the presence of iRBCs stimulates ECs, activating several immunological pathways and affecting antiviral (-parasitic) mechanisms and angiogenesis. Our data uncovered the induction of the interferon-alpha/beta signaling pathway in ECs in response to iRBCs.

The Yarlung Zangbo River Basin (YZRB), located in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, has been significantly impacted by global warming and greening. Serving as an indicator of coupled vegetation growth and climate variation, the spatiotemporal land surface temperature (LST) has undergone substantial changes in recent decades. In this study, we evaluated the components of the water and energy cycle from 1980 to 2015 using the VIC model, a widely recognized and applied distributed hydrological model, to obtain continuous 35-year daily LST data. The results demonstrated that the VIC model exhibited high adaptability in the YZRB. Then, the fluctuation of LST was examined, and the influence of environmental elements on LST was identified. Our modeling indicated that climate factors were increasing, while human activities remained stable in the YZRB. In YZRB, the greening was witnessed while LST showed an increasing trend. By distinguishing the impacts of climate and human activities on LST, LST was mainly affected by climate with contribution rate at 70.36% from 1980 to 1995. After 1995, LST was mainly affected by human activities, and its contribution rate was 55%. Grassland with medium cover showed the potential of a cooling influence. Among all environmental factors, albedo showed a negative and delayed effect on LST. Temperature, precipitation, and evapotranspiration were positively correlated with LST and displayed relatively synchronous changes. Soil moisture and NDVI were detected as leading positive changes in LST. Our study contributes to clarifying the mechanisms influencing LST in high-altitude and high-latitude regions under global greening, providing fundamental insights for socio-economic development in alpine mountainous regions.

He questions whether the endpoint used in our study, frequency of premature ventricular complexes (PVC) as a percentage of total complexes measured pre- versus post-ablation, is a valid indicator due to the skewed distribution and lack of granularity. Although we did not use absolute number of PVCs per day from a 24-hour Holter for our endpoint, we would argue that PVC percentage is a valid indicator of arrhythmia burden that has been associated in a dose-dependent manner with outcomes such as cardiomyopathy and mortality in cohorts such as the community-based Cardiovascular Health Study.1 In addition, in our study the median duration of monitoring (6 days) was longer than in prior studies of atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation and PVCs. A recent study that used commercially available event monitors concluded that longer monitoring periods resulted in significantly reduced mean measured error of PVC burden.2We sought to approach the measure for significant PVC burden (≥1000/day) mentioned by Dr. Wang, with a proxy threshold of ≥1% PVCs. In our sample 21.5% of patients had ≥1% PVCs pre-ablation and 19.2% had ≥1% PVCs post-ablation (p=0.76, chi-squared test), again suggesting lack of significant association between AF ablation and PVC burden. We agree with Dr. Wang that prospective studies would be worthwhile to assess the true impact of AF ablation on PVCs, and would stress that inclusion of samples unrestricted by PVC burden pre-ablation could help clarify this question.1. Fusion imaging (FI) technology using Echo-Navigator that integrates live transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) and overlays on real-time fluoroscopy.
